Until October 31, 1997, it broadcast to the cities of the European part of Russia, the Urals, Western Siberia, as well as the regions of Kazakhstan, Belarus, and the Baltic States adjacent to Russia. In 1997, the federal networks of the St. Petersburg — the Fifth Channel by decree of B. N. Yeltsin No. 919 were transferred to the newly created TV channel "Culture". Since November 1, 1997, the Fifth Channel has been left with frequencies for broadcasting only to St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.

Since October 1, 2006, the channel has restored the right to nationwide broadcasting. Currently, in addition to St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, it has licenses in 83 regions of Russia and is part of the first multiplex of digital television in Russia.

On December 20, 2008, Channel Five switched to round-the-clock broadcasting.

Until 2019, in the cable networks of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region on the frequencies of the "Fifth Channel" in the time interval from 7:00 to 8:00 and from 18:30 to 19:30 (until 2016), the LOT TV channel (Leningrad Regional TV Company), which today is called Len TV 24, was broadcast.

On April 2, 2018, the international version of the TV channel, Channel Five International, was launched.

Currently, most of the channel's broadcast is occupied by multi—part films (including original ones) and repeats of some series, and a smaller part is news, feature films, and programs of its own production.
