La 1 en directo is the first Spanish television channel , belonging to the public corporation Radiotelevisión Española . It has a general programming for all audiences, focused on information and entertainment, which includes informative programs, fiction series, contests or cinema, among others.

Founded as Televisión Española, it began its broadcasts on October 28, 1956 as the first existing television channel in Spain. With the creation of a second network in 1966 it was generically known as VHF, Programa nacional, Primer programa, Cadena I and Primera cadena. It was not until the appearance of private televisions that it adopted a commercial name: TVE-1, The First and 1, its current denomination. On the other hand, the brand "Televisión Española" has continued to be frequently used to refer only to the first channel, although the group manages more services.

He has been the audience leader in Spain for two stages: from its creation until 2004 and from 2009 to 2012.
