MRT 1 is a Macedonian public television channel belonging to the Makedonska Radio Televizija (MRT) group.
Adopting a generalist format, it is broadcast throughout the national territory over the air and by cable in several major cities. It is also included as part of the Total TV satellite package, available on subscription in the Balkans.
An international version of the channel, MRT Sat, is broadcast unencrypted by several satellites and can thus be received in many countries around the world.
Macedonian television was founded on December 14, 1964 as part of the regionalization of the Yugoslav national television (Jugoslavija Radio Televizija). Initially baptized TV Skopje, named after the capital of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia, it was designated under the acronym TVS 1 (TV Skopje 1) when the second channel was launched in 1978.
In 1991, at the time of the country's independence, the channel separated from Yugoslav television and was renamed MTV 1 (Makedonska televizija 1). She joined the European Broadcasting Union in July 1993. In the year 2000, the Macedonian government decided to create an international version of the channel in order to serve as a link with members of the diaspora and more generally, to serve as a showcase of the country for all those interested in this Balkan country.
The MRT 1 antenna is open to national and international productions. Among the productions from the Macedonian public service are in particular numerous documentaries as well as stage shows (variety shows, games). The channel produces three major editions of the newscast (dnevnik) at 17 p.m., 19.30 p.m. and 23 p.m., as well as news flashes at 10 p.m., 13 p.m., 15 p.m. and 22 p.m. and a morning show broadcast from 6:30 a.m. (Makedonska na utro; in French, "Macedonia-Morning").
The program schedule also includes successful European or American series, including Fringe, The Experts, The Big Bang Theory or Mentalist. The first part of the evening starts at 20:15, after the end of the big evening newspaper, the sports chronicle and the weather. It is divided into games, magazines, films or sporting events.
