WGN TV live, is an independent TV station located in Chicago, Illinois. It is owned by Nexstar Media Group and sister station to WGN (720 AM), the company's only radio property. WGN-TV's studios can be found in Chicago's North Center at West Bradley Place. It is the only major commercial TV station outside of the Loop. The transmitter can be found atop the Willis Tower in downtown Chicago.
WGN TV live, like Atlanta's concept progenitor WTBS, was a pioneering station. On November 8, 1978, it became the first U.S. TV station to be available via satellite transmission to both cable and direct-broadcast satellite subscribers. The former superstation feed, later renamed WGN America was made into a basic cable network, which allowed it to be added by local cable providers. Later, NewsNation soft-launched the station as NewsNation in September 2020. Live WGN TV was a charter affiliate of The WB and its successor network The CW. In 2016, it became an independent station.
WGN-TV, WGN news radio, and the now-defunct Chicagoland Television (CLTV) were three of Tribune Broadcasting's flagship properties. They were part of the Tribune Media conglomerate, which was formerly called the Tribune Company (August 2014). The company was acquired by Nexstar in September 2019.
