The PBS Distribution subsidiary is a joint venture between PBS and the WGBH Educational Foundation, which owned the international rights to most of the public television broadcaster's output. This means that PBS America is a British free-to-air television channel derived from PBS; a similar American public television broadcaster to the BBC and Channel 4.
It operates as a for-profit business separate from the main non-profit arm, with the goal of generating money for its parent organization. Additionally, it carries advertising and solicits donations from viewers differently than the main PBS version.
