SWR Fernsehen is one of eight regional third channels broadcasted by the Sudwestrundfunk. The channel targets the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Wurttemberg. The station was first broadcasted on 5 April 1969 as a joint venture between the Suddeutscher Rundfunk and the SDR. The network was renamed to Baden-Wurttemberg on the same day.
